รู้จักกับตู้จดหมาย (mailbox)

        ก่อนที่จะรู้จักกับอีเมล์ควรมาทำความรู้จักกับตู้จดหมายของตัวเองก่อน mbox หรือ mailbox คือ ตู้จดหมายของตนเอง เมื่อผู้ใช้มีชื่อยูสเซอรือยู่บนเครื่องหลักที่ต่ออยู่กับอินเทอร์เน็ต ก็จะได้รับตู้จดหมายโดยอัตโนมัติ ตู้จดหมายนี้เป็นที่เก็บจดหมายเมื่อมีผู้ส่งมาให้เรา ดังนั้นเมื่อเราเริ่มใช้เครื่องขณะใดก็ตาม ก็จะเปิดดูตู้จดหมายว่ามีจดหมายมาเก็บไว้ในตู้จดหมายนี้หรือไม่ สามารถเรียกจดหมายมาดูได้ เมื่อดูเสร็จแล้วจะนำออกจากตู้จดหมายหรือจะฝากเอาไว้ก่อนก็ได้ ตู้จดหมายจึงเสมือนตู้จดหมายจริง ๆ ที่เก็บจดหมายไว้ในเครื่องได้ และเป็นส่วนตัวเฉพาะบุคคลเท่านั้น

ปกติเมื่อเราเป็นผู้ใช้บนอินเตอร์เน็ตเราจะได้ชื่อแอดเดรสของการอ้างอิงบนอินเตอร์เน็ต และเราสามารถกำหนดชื่อนี้เป็นอีเมล์แอดเดรสได้ เช่น somsak@nwg.nectec.or.th ชื่อนี้มีสองส่วนคือส่วนหน้า @ และส่วนที่อยู่ข้างหลัง @ ส่วนหน้าหมายถึงตู้จดหมาย ซึ่งถือได้ว่าเป็นชื่อตู้จดหมาย ซึ่งผู้ใช้ชื่อยูสเซอร์นี้เป็นเจ้าของ ส่วนเครื่องที่ตู้จดหมายเก็บไว้จะมีชื่อเครื่อง ซึ่งในที่นี้ก็คือส่วนที่อยู่หลัง @ คือ nwg.nectec.or.th
 
แอดเดรสของคุณคืออะไร

        เมื่อคุณเริ่มเป็นสมาชิกในเครือข่ายอินเทอร์เน็ต สิ่งหนึ่งที่คุณได้รับคือมีชื่อยูสเซอร์บนเครื่องหลักเครื่องใดเครื่องหนึ่ง ณ เครื่องหลักนี้คุณได้ชื่อยูสเซอร์ จึงเสมือนว่าคุณมีแอดเดรสอยู่บนเครื่องหลักที่ตั้งอยู่บนอินเตอร์เน็ต บนอินเตอร์เน็ตมีการกำหนดแอดเดรสของเครื่องโดยใช้ชื่อ โดเมน เช่น nontri.ku.ac.th หมายถึงเครื่อง nontri อยู่ในเครือข่าย ku.ac.th ซึ่งหมายถึงเครือข่ายของมหาวิทยาลัยเป็นสถานศึกษาอยู่ในประเทศไทย เช่นหากได้รหัสชื่อยูสเซอร์เป็น b38bmx ก็หมายถึงว่าคุณมีแอดเดรสเป็น b38bmx@nontri.ku.ac.th ชื่อนี้จะเป็นชื่อที่อ้างอิงได้ทั่วโลก ทุกจุดบนอินเทอร์เน็ตสามารถหาเส้นทางส่งข่าวสารมาให้ b38bmx@nontri.ku.ac.th ได้อย่างแน่นอน

การรับส่งเมล์ระหว่างเครื่องใช้โปรโตคอล SMTP

       บนอินเตอร์เน็ตใช้โปรโตคอล TCP/IP เป็นฐานการติดต่อระหว่างกัน บน TCP/IP มีการกำหนดการรับส่งข้อมูลระหว่างกันในรูปแบบการรับส่งจดหมาย (เมล์) คือ SMTP SMTP ย่อมาจาก Simple Mail Transfer Protocol SMTP ได้รับการออกแบบมาให้มีการรับส่งเมล์กันอย่างอัตโนมัติ กล่าวคือ ในเครื่องหลักที่คุณทำงานจะมีโปรแกรมรับและส่งเมล์ ทำงานเป็นเดมอนโปรเซส (การทำงานเป็นแบลกกราวนด์โปรเซสคือทำงานตลอดเวลา) เพื่อทำหน้าที่รับและส่งเมล์ เช่นโปรแกรม smail หรือ sendmail ทำหน้าที่คอยส่งเมล์ ถ้ามีจดหมายอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ที่จะส่ง ก็จะติดต่อกับปลายทางแล้วยังส่งไม่ได้ ก็จะเก็บจดหมายนั้นไว้ก่อน รออีกสักสองสามชั่วโมงก็จะส่งใหม่อีก ทำซ้ำจนกว่าจะส่งได้สำเร็ส หากส่งไม่ได้ในสามวันก็จะส่งกลับให้เจ้าของ พร้อมทั้งบอกเหตุผลของการส่งไม่ได้

โปรโตคอล SMTP นี้ เป็นโปรโตคอลหลักสำหรับการรับส่งจดหมายอิเล็กทรอนิกส์มาตรฐานบนเครือข่ายอินเตอร์เน็ต ดังนั้นหากในระบบเครือข่ายอื่น เช่นเครือข่ายของไมโครซอฟต์มีการส่งด้วย msmail โปรแกรม msmail มีโปรโตคอลการส่งของตัวเอง หากต้องการผ่านเข้ามาทางอินเตอร์เน็ตจะต้องแปลงให้อยู่ในรูปโปรโตคอล SMTP ก่อน เส้นทางการเปลี่ยนนี้เรียกว่า SMTP เกตเวย์

สมมุติว่ามีจดหมายฉบับหนึ่งส่งมาจากอเมริกา ต้องการมายัง s38bmx@cc2.cpe.ku. ac.th ในขั้นต้นจะส่งผ่านเกตเวย์เข้าประเทศไทย ซึ่งมาจาก uunet เมื่อเข้ามาประเทศไทยก็จะหาตัวให้บริการชื่อโดเมน ซึ่ง ac.th อยู่ที่จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย ก็จะไปขอใช้บริการหาชื่อ ku.ac.th ซึ่งได้เส้นทางมายังมหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ จากนั้นจึงมาถามหาหน่วยบริการชื่อโดเมน ที่มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ ซึ่งเก็บไว้ที่เครื่อง nontri เครื่อง nontri จะให้เส้นทางเครื่อง cc2.cpe ไป หลังจากนั้นก็จะได้เส้นทางครบจากต้นทางมายัง cc2.cpe

ความสำคัญของโปรแกรมเมล์ไคลแอนต์

        เพื่อให้ผู้ใช้ได้ใช้งานง่ายขึ้น จึงมีผู้พัฒนาโปรแกรมเมล์ไคลแอนต์ เช่น โปรแกรมรับส่งเมล์บนดอสบนวินโดว์ โปรแกรมเหล่านี้จะช่วยให้ผู้ใช้ใช้งานได้ง่ายขึ้น เช่น โปรแกรม pine สำหรับวินโดว์ โปรแกรมจำพวกอินเตอร์เน็ตไคลแอนต์มีพัฒนากันหลายบริษัท โดยเน้นเป็นโปรแกรมที่ทำให้พีซีเชื่อมโยงกับเครื่องหลัก และใช้บริการรับส่งจดหมายโดยตรง โดยเชื่อมกับเมล์บ็อกของตนเองได้
